Pakatan adamant on scrapping Anti-Fake News Act, says Guan Eng

PAKATAN Harapan deputy president Lim Guan Eng said the coalition’s stand on the Anti-Fake News Act was clear – that it wanted the new law abolished.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who is PH’s chairman, said the act would be retained, but reworked to give fake news a clearer definition.

“I will clarify with him (Dr Mahathir) tomorrow… it must be abolished,” Lim said in a press conference in Penang today.

“Even though we are now the federal government, we cannot determine what is true or false. Truth must be based on facts.

“We all know the law was introduced to cover up the 1MDB (1Malaysia Development Bhd) scandal.

“I am confident the position is the same, even for the PM,” said Lim, who is the incoming finance minister in Dr Mahathir’s cabinet.

The former Penang chief minister also denied a statement purportedly issued by the Finance Ministry that the goods and services tax would be abolished starting June 1 under the PH federal government.

“The only person who can make a policy announcement is the prime minister, and he has confirmed that he made no such announcement.

“Don’t believe it. There are many false news and rumours going around,” he said. – May 14, 2018.
