POPULAR lawyer and activist Ambiga Sreenevasan is the perfect candidate for the position of attorney-general, said Malaysian Bar president George Varughese.
Speaking to Malaysiakini, Varughese said the Malaysian Bar would support Ambiga for the position since she was not a politician, which ensured the independence of the Attorney-General’s Chambers.
“If Ambiga is appointed as the new A-G, she will ensure that the chambers will be free from political influences and interference,” Varughese told Malaysiakini.
Ambiga is a former Bar president and has also served as the chairperson of electoral reform group Bersih.
The 62-year-old was one of the eight recipients of the United States’ International Women of Courage Award in 2009.
Her name came up for the position after Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad had last week said the country now had no attorney-general.
The prime minister had previously accused Mohamed Apandi Ali of protecting former prime minister Najib Razak over the 1Malaysian Development Berhad scandal, with strong indications that he would be removed soon. – May 14, 2018.
