Don't get cocky, Utusan tells Pakatan

The Malaysian Insight

UMNO-OWNED daily Utusan Malaysia has warned the new Pakatan Harapan government not to be too proud of its victory, as what goes up must come down.

Writing under the pseudonym Awang Selamat, the daily’s editors said things always come full circle and that the people will punish the government if it fails to deliver.

“Life, including the 14th general election results, is like a wheel. Sometimes we are down and sometimes, we are on top. What is evident is that if you fail to deliver your promises, it will lead to the downfall of the government.

“Learn from how the people punished (Umno); whose turn is next?,” the editors said today.

Awang also urged PH to behave responsibly and not go after political foes for vengeance.

“The best approach is to win over people’s hearts, not taking revenge on your political enemies,” the column read.

“Even though PH won by a huge margin, it has not yet been tested as the government of the day and could easily be marred by conflicts.”

The editors said Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad had been given a second chance to learn from his mistakes in the past.

“Bersatu, led by Dr Mahathir, has fewer parliamentary seats compared with PKR and DAP.

“This was not the scenario when he was PM for 22 years with Umno, where it had the most seats,” Utusan said.– May 13, 2018
