Malaysia has no attorney-general, says Dr Mahathir

The Malaysian Insight

MALAYSIA currently has no attorney-general, said Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

He said current attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali is being investigated and, therefore, has no power.

“We have placed certain restrictions on a number of people who may be involved in wrongdoing or in making wrong decisions.

“So, at the moment, we don’t have an AG,” Dr Mahathir said at a press conference today.

The Pakatan Harapan chairman said Apandi was lying when the latter issued a statement saying that he was the government’s lawyer.

Dr Mahathir had accused Apandi of trying to cover up former prime minister Najib Razak’s alleged involvement in the siphoning of funds from state investor 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).

Dr Mahathir’s announcement follows a lockdown of the Attorney-General’s Chambers in Putrajaya yesterday, with barb wire blocking its entrance and exit.

Apandi had denied that his office was in lockdown, saying his staff was able to move in and out freely. – May 12, 2018
