PM announces formation of council of elders

PRIME Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has announced that a council of elders will be formed to help Pakatan Harapan achieve the 100 promises it had made to the people. 

It will comprise former ministers and government servants, such as former Bank Negara Malaysia governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz, and will be headed by twice former finance minister Daim Zainuddin. 

“This group of eminent persons will consists of Daim Zainuddin, Dr Zeti Akhtar Aziz, Hassan Merican, Robert Kuok and Dr Jomo Kwame Sundram,” he said at a press conference today.

The secretariat for the council will be economist Dr Muhammad Abdul Khalid and veteran journalist A. Kadir Jasin will be in charge of media. 

Dr Mahathir said the council will study issues before they are brought to the cabinet level to be debated. 

“The eminent persons will do initial studies submitted by officers and other parties. They will do it before they prepare papers for the cabinet,” Dr Mahathir said. 

The council is aimed at helping to realise the 100 promises made by Pakatan Harapan to be fulfilled in 100 days, and then it will be disbanded.

“This team will help develop the policies and plans for achieving the 100-day promise in PH to the people. The term of this team will also be 100 days.” – May 12, 2018.
