NAJIB Razak announced his resignation as Umno president and Barisan Nasional chairman at 3.02pm today at a packed press conference flanked by party leaders.

“As Umno president and Barisan Nasional chairman, I will resign immediately.

“This is because, according to our party constitution, whoever is leader of a party and fails in an election, it is the moral responsibility of the person to accept the responsibility.

“So, with an open heart, I accept that principle and relinquish both positions.”

He also announced that Ahmad Zahid Hamidi would carry out the functions and duties of the party president and as BN chairman.

HIshammuddin Hussein will carry out the duties of party deputy president and BN deputy chairman.

Najib said the party wings – Wanita, Youth and Puteri – had also accepted his decision and pledged their cooperation to rebuild the party. – May 12, 2018.
