UMNO wings will hold a press conference today to address the unrest in the party after several members demanded party president Najib Razak to step down last night, following an abysmal performance in the 14th general elections.
The presser will be lead by Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin, is scheduled for 2pm in the Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur.
Khairy did not attend Umno’s low-key 72nd anniversary celebration last night at PWTC.
There is also talk of a groundswell of revolt in the party demanding Najib’s resignation as party chief and to take responsibility for Umno’s disastorous electoral outing.
Several Umno Youth chiefs from around the country have issued statements asking the former prime minister to step down.
Umno Youth deputy chief Khairul Azwan also urged the leadership of the party to be revamped to stay relevant.
“We need a revolution in the party so that Umno is accepted again by the people,” he said.
It appears that pressure is also starting from within other Barisan Nasional component parties for Najib to step down as BN chairman.
Gerakan Youth chief Tan Keng Lian tweeted, “The very least Najib Razak could have done was to tender his resignation as Barisan Nasional chairman. We need a fresh start and you are still delaying it. Don’t bring us down further!” – May 12, 2018.
