PAKATAN Harapan’s cabinet will have a Finance Ministry adviser in charge of efforts to recover funds siphoned from 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), Reuters reports.
This would mean “restarting the 1MDB probe” to repatriate the money, it cites a source from within Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s campaign team.
A second source also told Reuters this announcement would be made today when Dr Mahathir names his new cabinet, which will start with 10 key ministries.
Dr Mahathir has said Najib would face consequences if he was found to have done wrong. The former prime minister was finance minister and also chairman of 1MDB’s advisory board.
An earlier investigation in Malaysia into 1MDB ended with the attorney-general declaring that Najib had not done anything wrong. It is alleged that money from 1MDB, channelled through different entities, ended up in Najib’s personal bank accounts. Najib said the funds were donations from the Saudi royal family.
1MDB is being investigated in at least six countries, including the US, over alleged misappropriation of over $4.5 billion from the state investor. – May 12, 2018.
