Perak sultan asks BN for proof of majority support

BARISAN Nasional must present at least 30 Perak assemblymen to Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah tomorrow to support its bid to form the state government.

“The sultan’s office received a letter from BN saying it has the simple majority. It said 27 BN state assemblymen and three PAS state assemblymen had agreed to form a coalition government,” a representative of the sultan, Mohd Annuar Zaini, said outside the royal residence in Ipoh after Pakatan Harapan’s audience with the ruler earlier today.

“However, his Highness wants to verify the letter’s content. He has requested that BN present all 30 assemblymen to prove that it has their support.

“The sultan is giving PH preference as it has the most seats but it has to prove that it has 30 seats because the sultan has to act in accordance with the Perak constitution,” said Annuar.

“If PH cannot prove it has the simple majority, his Highness cannot delay the formation of the state government,” he said.

PH had asked for an extension until 2pm tomorrow to secure a simple majority, Annuar said.

BN called a press conference last night to declare it had a simple majority without the presence of the three newly elected PAS assemblymen that purportedly support it.

Perak PAS state commissioner Razman Zakaria is in Terengganu today to meet the party’s central leadership to discuss the formation of a coalition government with BN or PH.

PH won 29 seats, one seat short of a simple majority of 30 to form the state government. – May 11, 2018.
