Newly formed Sabah BN govt on brink of collapse

The Malaysian Insight

THE Sabah Barisan Nasional government is in danger of losing its majority in the 60-seat assembly, barely hours after Chief Minister Musa Aman took his oath of office last night.

Two Sabah Umno assemblymen – Abdul Muis Picho (Sebatik) and Hamisah Samat (Tanjong Batu) – showed up at noon at Parti Warisan Sabah president Mohd Shafie Apdal’s residence.

Warisan sources said both had switched sides.

The possible defections will reduce Musa’s 31 seat majority to 26, effectively shifting the balance of power to Warisan and Shafie.

Warisan sources said Shafie has ordered all his assemblymen to converge at his house by 2.30pm today.

They said they expected more BN assemblymen to join Warisan and its partners, DAP and PKR, in the next few hours.

Meanwhile, Warisan also got another three Upko seats, whose elected representatives had decided to follow the party’s president, Wilfred Madius Tangau, to work with Warisan..

The three representativess are Abidin Madingkir (Panginatan), Ewon Benedick (Kadamaian), and Bobbey Suan (Nabawan).

It could not be determined why the three Upko members had decided to change their minds, but it is understood they were held at Sri Gaya by Musa before his cabinet was sworn in late last night.

The five, including the two former Umno members, are presently at Istana Negara along with Shafie to be interviewed by the Head of State, Juhar Mahiruddin. – May 11, 2018.
