THE sultan has the ultimate power to decide who will govern Kedah if there is an hung state assembly, said Kedah PKR head Johari Abdul.

Johari said that if Barisan Nasional decided to join PAS to form a simple majority, the decision still lay with the sultan.

“Pakatan Harapan doesn’t have to persuade any assemblyman against crossing over, as it is clear that the sultan will decide on it,” he told Malaysia Decides.

In the 14th general election, PH, led by Mukhriz Mahathir, won 18 of the 36 seats in the Kedah state assembly, with PAS winning 15 and BN three.

The swearing-in of the new Kedah menteri besar is scheduled for this evening.

Johari, who is also the MP for Sungai Petani and the Gurun assemblyman, said that the state speaker did not necessarily have to come from any of the three parties.
