3 top civil servants in Dr Mahathir's cross hairs

DR Mahathir Mohamad today took aim at three top government officers, hinting that their time in office may be up soon.

First on the list was Attorney-General Mohamed Apandi Ali, whom the new prime minister said had “tarnished his own credibility”.

He hinted that Apandi might not be in power for long, as he used to be in cahoots with former prime minister Najib Razak.

“We have to look into who the A-G is. At the moment, the A-G has undermined his own credibility.

“He has hidden evidence of wrongdoing and that is wrong in law. We have to do what is permitted by the laws of this country,” Dr Mahathir said in a press conference today.

Apandi absolved Najib from any wrongdoing in the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal two years ago.

Dr Mahathir also hinted there will be changes to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

“We will study whether the MACC is fair or not. If we find that they are biased or in favour of any group, including ourselves, we would have to change them,” Dr Mahathir said.

The Pakatan Harapan chairman added Election Commission head Mohd Hashim Abdullah to the list of top civil servants who may be replaced.

“If we find out that he (EC) is involved in corrupt practices, biased and all that, we would have to take action against him.”

The 92-year old stressed that any change made to the heads of government agencies or departments would be done when Parliament reconvenes.

“As we promised, the new heads of government would be appointed by Parliament.” – May 11, 2018.
