Anti-fake News Act among 'oppressive' laws to be reviewed

A REVIEW of “oppressive” laws is top on Pakatan Harapan’s agenda, said Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who is prime minister again at 93.

The Malaysian prime minister said the newly passed Anti-fake News Act and the National Security Council (NSC) Act are among the laws the new government would study with a view towards their abolition.

“We will abolish laws which are oppressive and unfair. We have to study the fake news law and the NSC which are designed to frighten people,” Dr Mahathir said in a press conference late yesterday night.

He said the government would also study the cases of formerly opposition politicians to check if they had been unfairly charged.

“We need to look back at all these charges levelled against people in the opposition. Look to see if there is a case or no case,” Dr Mahathir said.

Dr Mahathir was sworn in today at 9.30pm as the 7th prime minister of Malaysia after PH defeated Barisan Nasional the 14th general election. – May 11, 2018.
