Suhakam to help new govt shape policy

The Malaysian Insight

THE Human Rights Commission of Malaysia hopes the change in government will “correct previous excesses” owing to lapses in governance that have affected the rule of law, the commission said today.

Welcoming the results of GE14, its chairman, Razali Ismail, said Suhakam would do its part in offering proposals during this critical time.

“Suhakam will spare no efforts in helping format proposals at this critical point, when the people have made their choice for a government committed to democracy, human rights, and the rule of law, in the context of the pluralism of the federal constitution.

“Suhakam hopes for an early formation of the government in order for it to move away from the past and fulfil its promises of governance and incorruptibility,” he said today.

Yesterday, the people voted to remove the Barisan Nasional government in favour of opposition pact Pakatan Harapan, which won 113 federal seats.

BN only managed to win 79 seats while PAS won 18.

PH chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad is scheduled to be sworn in as Malaysia’s seventh prime minister at 5pm today.

However, a palace source said no swearing-in ceremony would take place today. – May 10, 2018.
