TWO months ago, Pakatan Harapan promised to enforce or change 10 things within the first 100 days of coming into power in Putrajaya.
Yesterday, PH made it to Putrajaya under the chairmanship of Dr Mahathir Mohamad in a shocking electoral upset.
The 100-day countdown to deliver the promises starts today as Dr Mahathir, Malaysia’s fourth and longest-serving prime minister, returns to power as the seventh.
The 10 pledges on PH’s to-do list are:
1. Abolishing the goods and services tax, which was implemented by the former Barisan Nasional administration in 2015 and is blamed for causing the cost of living to rise.
2. Reintroducing fuel subsidies to stabilise petrol and diesel prices that have been fluctuating each week, except for the past few weeks with the elections ongoing.
3. Eliminating unnecessary debts of Felda settlers, who were seen as a crucial voter segment in PH’s campaign for change in BN- and Malay-dominant parliamentary seats.
4. Introducing an Employees’ Provident Fund scheme for housewives.
5. Standardising and increasing the minimum wage across the country.
6. Deferring PTPTN (National Higher Education Fund Corporation) student loan payments until borrowers earn over RM4,000 a month.
7. Setting up Royal Commissions of Inquiry into scandal-ridden institutions, namely 1Malaysia Development Bhd, Majlis Amanah Rakyat, Tabung Haji, and Felda; and bringing those responsible for the scandals to justice.
8. Restoring Sabah and Sarawak’s autonomous rights, as enshrined in the Malaysia Agreement 1963.
9. Introducing a “Skim Peduli Sihat” (healthcare scheme) that provides a RM500 subsidy for basic medical treatment at registered private clinics for those in the Bottom 40 group.
10. Reviewing all mega projects awarded to foreign companies, such as the RM55 billion East Coast Rail Link. – May 10, 2018.
