IN the Election Commission’s official tally, Pakatan Harapan (PH) has won enough seats for a simple majority in Parliament, ending Barisan Nasional’s 60-year reign in Malaysia.
The final score is Barisan Nasional 79; PAS 18; PH 122; DAP 9; Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku 1; Bebas 3.
PH is made up of PKR, DAP, Amanah and Bersatu, while Parti Warisan Sabah is an unofficial ally.
DAP, Bersatu and Amanah candidates contested under the PKR logo in a show of unity.
The breakdown by party is as follows: PKR (49), DAP (42), Amanah (10), Bersatu (12) and Warisan (8). The Batu seat was won by Independent P. Prabakaran, who has been endorsed by PH.
In the battle for state seats, PH retained control over Penang and Selangor, while wresting Malacca, Negri Sembilan, and in a surprise development, Johor β birthplace of Umno and BN stronghold.
BN clung on to Pahang, Perlis, and Sarawak while PAS held on to Kelantan while winning control over neighbouring Terengganu.
The state government is hung in Kedah, Perak, and Sabah.
In Perak, PH is one seat short of the 30 state seats it needs to form the Perak government. BN won 27 seats and PAS three seats.
In Kedah, PH is again one seat short of the majority it needs to form assume control of the state. It won 18, BN 15, and PAS 3 seats.
In Sabah, Warisan’s 21, PKR’s two and DAP’s six seats add up to 29 to tie with BN. Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku, which won only one seat, will decide who will be the new state government by the coalition it chooses to align itself with. β May 10, 2018.
