New government and PM‎ to be sworn in today

The Malaysian Insight

AT 3am today, Dr Mahathir Mohamad gave Malaysians the news they had been craving to hear since polls closed at 5pm the day before – Pakatan Harapan had achieved a simple majority of 112 seats and had won control of Putrajaya.

This was a day of records.

The coalition that has ruled Malaysia since independence had been knocked into submission, with many ministers on the political scrapheap.

Malaysia now has the oldest leader in the world.

The states of Sabah and Sarawak are no longer ‎fixed deposits of BN.

The birthplace of Umno is now firmly ensconced in the hands of Pakatan Harapan.

‎The shocking result was greeted with silence by caretake prime minister Najib Razak and annoying indecision by the Election Commission. The flow of results slowed to a trickle when it became clear that PH was getting the upper-hand.

But all that is water under the bridge.

This morning, Najib will hold a press conference where he is expected to concede defeat officially.

At the same time, ‎Dr Mahathir and Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail will be sworn in as prime minister and deputy prime minister respectively.

“We informed the palace that we achieved the majority, so there will be a swearing ceremony,” he said at a press conference. – May 10, 2018.
