BN loses 8 of its 10 seats in Penang

PAKATAN Harapan not only keeps Penang, unofficial results point to a state legislative assembly with almost zero Barisan Nasional rep.

BN’s lynchpin party Umno, the only component party with seats in the state, lost eight of its 10 state seats.

BN lost Penaga to PAS. It lost three state seats in Balik Pulau, Bertam, Pinang Tunggal, Teluk Ayer Tawar and Sungai Acheh to PH’s PKR, Amanah and Bersatu.

Unofficial results show BN is left with only Permatang Berangan and Sungai Dua.

DAP and PKR successfully defended their 19 and 10 seats, respectively.

With Amanah picking up Permatang Pasir from PAS, Penang PH may have 37 state seats out of 40.

It means the state legislative assembly will have only two opposition backbenchers from BN and one from PAS.

Again, for the third time since the 2008 polls, BN component parties MCA, MIC and Gerakan failed to win a single seat in the state.

Caretaker chief minister Lim Guan Eng received a standing ovation from party members and supporters when he arrived at the DAP vote tallying centre in City Bayview Hotel at 10.30pm.

“This is a victory for all of us. All Penangites,” he said.

BN tried to put up a fight, raising environmental and developmental issues as well as objections to major state infrastructure projects such as the undersea tunnel.

Two-term chief minister Lim Guan Eng has been a constant target of BN, and is currently on trial for corruption for his purchase of his Jalan Pinhorn residence,

Since early this year, his administration has been in the spotlight when the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission launched an investigation into the tunnel project and its contractor.

Nearly all the seats in Penang saw multi-cornered fights with PAS, Parti Sosialis Malaysia, Malaysian United Party, Parti Cinta Malaysia, Penang Front Party, Parti Rakyat Malaysia, Penang Alternative Party and a few independents unsuccessfully challenging the ruling party. Almost all of them will lose their deposit. – May 10, 2018.
