KUANG assemblyman Mohd Rafiq Abdullah said Rawang residents should continue their protests over the proposed construction of an incinerator in their area until the Selangor government listened to them.

The Bersatu supreme council member said the government needed to heed the voices of the people who are against the RM4.5 billion project due to perceived health and environmental risks from living near an incinerator.

“They are planning the project around people’s housing schemes.

“I told the state assembly, if they think the project is so great then do it beside MB’s (the Selangor menteri besar) house,” he told The Malaysian Insight.

Rafiq said he had raised the issue during the last state assembly meeting.

“We are not against technology, but (against) the location of the project.

“We have yet to see any significant study to say that it (incinerator) is safe.

“The reason for concern is that it is going to be built in a highly populated area,” he added.

Rawang Tolak Insinerator Network (RTI) will hold a peaceful protest on January 21 from 8am to 12pm at the Bandar Tasik Puteri night market.

Its spokesman Abdul Hanan Abd Mokti said the group was adamant that its voice be heard by the state government.

“This protest is to remind the authorities we are still here. We have made several requests for a meeting but have yet to receive a response.

“(RTI) is not a voice of one or two people, but a united front against the incinerator project,” he said.

RTI is expecting a crowd of between 500 and 1,000 people, who are residents of Bandar Tasik Puteri and from surrounding areas like Kota Puteri, Batu Arang, Coalfields, Saujana, and M Residence.
