Segambut voters persevere despite looming deadline

The Malaysian Insight

THE lines at polling stations in Segambut have reached more than 60 voters per line as at 4pm today.

Pakatan Harapan’s Segambut candidate Hannah Yeoh said this was concerning as polling stations close at 5pm.

“At any one time, we were looking at 60 people in a queue. It was still 60 people about 3pm, so it is a worry that they will not make it in time to vote,” she told Malaysia Decides.

The former Selangor state assembly speaker urged the people to continue to vote and object if prevented from doing so.

“If you’re in the compound and you have the ballot paper, you have the right to vote.”

Yeoh said reports that Election Commission staff were influencing senior citizens on how to vote was also worrying.

“When they asked for guidance, an EC officer in charge would tell them where to tick. We have sorted that out. They were told to tick PAS, according to a senior citizen,” she said.

Meanwhile, electoral watchdog Bersih 2.0 urged Malaysians to continue lining up even if it was past 5pm.

“Stay in line, even if it is past 5pm. Do not leave until you are allowed to vote!” the committee said. – May 9, 2018.
