Not allowing challenges to flawed electoral roll is cheating, says Maria

THE law that does not allow a flawed electoral roll to be challenged is allowing the Election Commission to cheat, said the PKR candidate for Petaling Jaya, Maria Chin Abdullah.

The former Bersih 2.0 chairperson said it was unfortunate that such things were still happening.

“We have been raising our concerns about the electoral roll. The law does not allow us to challenge the electoral roll. It needs to be changed because it’s unfair,” she told Malaysia Decides today.

Earlier today, Bersih 2.0 said that it had verified reports that over 500 Form 11 forms had been issued in the Wangsa Maju constituency by the EC.

The forms involve confirmation of identities in the case of dubious voters.

“These forms were issued in response to phantom voters, voters who lived outside the constituency but were transferred in without their knowledge, and voters who were paid a sum to change their voting address,” Bersih said in a statement today.

Maria said the matter would trigger anger in some voters.

“You allow mistakes in the electoral roll, but you don’t want to correct it.

“It’s cheating. It means the EC wants to cheat.”

Earlier today, Maria raised concerns that the queues at the SMK Tropicana polling station were too long.

She was worried that voters would not have enough time to cast their votes, with the cutoff time being 5pm.

At 3pm, the lines had dispersed and only about 100 voters were seen waiting to cast their votes. – May 9, 2018.
