THE differences between the two men – especially in their electioneering for GE14 – could not have been any more stark.
One sought to touch the heart. The other sought to touch the wallet.
In speeches made just two hours before campaigning ended, Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Najib Razak made last-minute appeals for support to win the most closely-fought elections in Malaysian history.
Both targeted the dominant Malay Muslim majority, particularly selected demographics that will decide the outcome today.
The incumbent and sixth prime minister was all what Dr Mahathir said he believed in. Cash was king as he abolished the personal income tax for those 26 years and below, gave two days of holiday next week, and promised five toll-free days on the highways during the coming Hari Raya Aidilfitri festivities.
Najib is going for first-time voters and Malays with roots in rural Malaysia, as they are the key demographics that will review his performance and decide his fate.
Dr Mahathir spoke about history, dignity, equity, and equality, offering nothing but a chance to rebuild the country after Najib’s current handling of the economy.
He appealed to the key women and youth vote, saying they were the crucial components in making Malaysia better again. He called for tolerance and unity among the races, reminding the Malays that others had a stake in Malaysia.
He didn’t offer to give money now, but said his coalition would work for prosperity for all as they worked to rebuild the nation.
Cash now or later, the choice is clear. – May 9, 2018.
