WANT to know how far we have fallen as a country?
Just compare former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s address to the nation with that of caretaker prime minister Najib Razak.
In a speech that rolled back the years, the Pakatan Harapan chief spoke about recovering our dignity as a country and living in harmony with and respecting one another.
Dr Mahathir talked about equality for women and giving a voice to the youth.
He recalled the rise of Malaysia and its transformation into an Asian Tiger.
He urged Malaysians to vote for change and to reject the “cash is king” philosophy of Najib.
At the same time in a nationwide telecast, Najib was rolling out his latest clutch of goodies for voters. Once again, he was demonstrating that he has only one page in his playbook β when in doubt, just lob some money at Malaysians.
Throughout the election campaign, Dr Mahathir has called Najib a one-trick pony.
Last night, Najib endeavoured to live up to the description. First, he announced there would be no income tax for those under 26. Next, he said there would be two public holidays post-elections and five toll-free days during Hari Raya. If BN was given the mandate.
By rolling out one sweetener after another, Najib showed he truly believed the Malaysian voter could be turned by cash.
Last night, one leader outlined the challenges facing Malaysia and made a call to arms. The other chap tossed more goodies our way. Which will you vote for? β May 9, 2018.
