THE culmination of the pro-Palestine picket near the United States Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, held since December 26, was attended by more than 200 people, including prominent figures.

Among leaders present at the closing night of the “Kepung Demi Palestin” picket were Agriculture and Food Security Minister Mohamad Sabu, Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and social activist Chua Tian Chang, better known as Tian Chua.

Activities held from 8pm included music performances and a bunting display showcasing the history of Israel’s oppression of Palestinians.

The site was adorned with candles displaying the words “Save Gaza”.

In his speech, Mohamad said humanity and unity were essential to achieve peace.

Nik Nazmi said the government’s efforts to speak against the oppression of Palestinians in Gaza have gained global attention.

“We want to send a clear message that people worldwide … will not remain silent as long as the rights of Palestinians are not respected,” he said.

The crowd was seen dispersing at midnight under police supervision.

International media reported at least 20,000 Palestinians have been killed since October 7.
