Dr Mahathir warns BN may prevent smooth transition of power

PAKATAN Harapan chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad says there is a real possibility of the opposition coalition winning the general election, but warned Barisan Nasional could create obstacles to a smooth transition of power.

In a speech telecast live from Langkawi, where he is standing for election at the age of 93, Dr Mahathir said the opposition was unable to defeat the government in the past because voters were not confident of their ability to bring change to the country.

“But this election is different. The duty and responsibility of the opposition is not just to oppose but to defeat BN and be the government,” he said.

Dr Mahathir said PH will very likely come out the victor in the 14th general election.

“This time there is a big chance that a change of government will occur.

“Efforts to impede this change might be attempted.

“It is hoped that the police and the army will not neglect their responsibilities when the constitution and country’s laws are violated,” he said.

Earlier, Dr Mahathir urged the Malays to redeem their pride and the future of their children by voting BN out.

“In their eyes, our pride and dignity can be bought with money. Don’t allow them to continue insulting and belittling us like this.

“The bribes will not last forever. Don’t pawn the country for a little bit of money. This will continue to happen if Najib Razak is prime minister,” he said.

Dr Mahathir, who was prime minister for 22 years, paid tribute to women and pledged to address all forms of  discrimination against the other sex.

He said the opposition hoped to provide adequate training and opportunities for youth to raise their income and quality of life.

“The youth will inherit the fruits of our labour today, they must be given a voice early.

“They will know what they want, better than an outsider, but cooperation between the young and old will be beneficial.” – May 8, 2018.
