Sabah Bersih records 65 election offences... so far

The Malaysian Insight

WITH less than 24 hours to polling day, electoral reform group Bersih 2.0’s Sabah office has recorded at least 65 polls offences committed by various political parties.

It said parties under Barisan Nasional have committed the most offences, with two instances of bribing and vote-buying, and four instances of holding events where gifts are given out, as well as several instances of using public assets and machinery in the last nine days of campaigning.

Pakatan Harapan and Parti Warisan Sabah recorded one election offence each – giving out gifts at events – while six cases of the same offence involving other state parties were recorded.

State Bersih chairman Beverly Joeman said the local advocacy officer will compile all the records before handing them to the Bersih office in Kuala Lumpur.

A total of 1.17 million Sabahans are expected to cast their votes tomorrow.

Sabah and its neighbour, Sarawak, have long been BN’s “safety net”, but in the 14th general election, votes from the two states are crucial for caretaker prime minister Najib Razak and his men, as support for the ruling coalition drops in the peninsula due to the people’s growing backing of the opposition charge led by former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad. – May 8, 2018.
