AirAsia's Tony Fernandes gets roasting on social media

The Malaysian Insight

AIRASIA group chief executive officer Tony Fernandes has overtaken businessman Low Taek Jho as public enemy number one in the past 24 hours, judging by the avalanche of condemnation on social media.

The budget airlines head received brickbats after he posted a video thanking Barisan Nasional for “putting the people first” and was later photographed with caretaker prime minister Najib Razak with the backdrop of a plane splashed with the words “Hebatkan Negaraku” (Make My Nation Great).

Low, also known as Jho Low, and Najib are at the heart of the internationally known 1Malaysia Development Berhad scandal.

The slogan “now everyone can lie” has spread across social media, with users slamming Fernandes for openly supporting BN.

Social media users both on Facebook and Twitter roasted the airline boss after news and photographs of the BN-themed airline got out, labelling him a “traitor”.

“Tony Fernandes the traitor. The people supported your airlines and now you betray the people,” Facebook user David Gobind posted.

Another Facebook user, Foon Peng Kheong, posted “Tony’s new slogan: now everyone can be corrupt”.

Yap Yok Fok said that he was disappointed with Fernandes for the move, which came less than a month after the latter had offered Malaysians cheap tickets to come home and vote.

“To say we are disappointed with Tony Fernandes is an understatement… the ingrate who forgets so quickly,” he said.

An edited poster of AirAsia is also making the rounds on social media with the caption “now everyone can vote”.

“Thanks Tony. Most Malaysians going back to vote will vote for Pakatan Harapan,” the poster read.

Twitter users said Fernandes should stay out of politics as he was a businessman and should not be taking either side.

“Shame on AirAsia for taking sides. Looks like money and wealth are more important than integrity,” Mohan, whose handle is @mohanaraj_b, said.

Two weeks ago, Fernandes was praised by Malaysians for fixing flight prices so that people could go back to vote on May 9. – May 8, 2018.
