DAP’S candidate in Tanah Rata, Chiong Yoke Kong, said the Election Commission and police allowed him to enter the nomination centre to file his candidacy last Saturday even though he did not have a candidate’s pass.
“I only got my candidate’s pass on nomination day. I told police that I had paid the deposit, and I was allowed entry.
“So, why was the PKR candidate in Negri Sembilan (Dr S. Streram) prevented by police from entering the nomination centre?” he said at a ceramah in Teluk Intan tonight.
He said such double standards show that the EC and police in Negri Sembilan had acted in bad faith.
“This is their dirty tactic to dampen the spirit of Pakatan Harapan.
“Every citizen has the right to contest in the elections.”
Caretaker Negri Sembilan menteri besar Mohamad Hasan won the Rantau state seat uncontested after Dr Streram was denied entry into the nomination centre for not having a candidate’s pass.
Dr Streram and PH leaders, including PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli, have cried foul over the incident.
Rafizi said the EC official who blocked Dr Streram from entering the nomination centre is a Rembau Umno Youth member.
Rantau is a state seat under the Rembau federal constituency, which will be defended by incumbent Khairy Jamaluddin in the May 9 polls. – May 6, 2018.
