FORMER Bersih 2.0 chairman and human rights lawyer Ambiga Sreenevasan reminded Malaysians today to persevere when faced with adversity during this election season.

Ambiga told a crowd of over 5,000 people at Taman Tun Dr Ismail tonight that the Election Commission (EC) had tried to cheat during the 2008 and 2013 elections, but Malaysians rose to the challenge.

“We are up against the might of the EC. We’ve done it before; we did it in 2013 despite all the cheating,” she told the crowd.

“In 2008, Barisan Nasional lost two thirds, in 2013, BN lost the popular vote, in 2018 we will make sure BN will lose power in Putrajaya. That is our mission,” Ambiga said to rapturous applause from the audience.

She added the current government was leading the country in a downward spiral and Malaysians need to do something about it.

“We cannot stand it any longer. We have no choice. They didn’t just rob us of money, they have robbed us of our future.

“They have robbed us of our dignity. They have robbed us of our moral compass. They have no more moral compass. They are leading us in this direction,” Ambiga said.

The former president of the Malaysian Bar praised Malaysians for their resilience in the face of adversity.

“We are a blessed nation. Only in Malaysia, people could have withstood that kind of theft.

“We can withstand that because we have the resources and talented people who knew how to make money,” Ambiga said.

She was at the mega ceramah alongside former Umno minister Rafidah Aziz to support Pakatan Harapan’s Segambut candidate Hannah Yeoh.

Ambiga, who lives in the Segambut parliamentary constituency, was Yeoh’s proposer on nomination day last week and the candidacy was seconded by Anwar Ibrahim’s daughter Nurul Nuha Anwar. – May 5, 2018.
