THERE is a growing wave of support for Perikatan Nasional, PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said, following the coalition’s landslide victory in Kemaman.

“(The win) not only proves acceptance of his position as the menteri besar of Terengganu, but also confirms the support for Perikatan during the recent by-elections,” said Takiyuddin, referring to yesterday’s winner, Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar of PAS.

“This is a referendum of the people’s rejection of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional coalition,” he said in a statement today.

Takiyuddin said Samsuri, who won by a margin of 37,220 votes, had claimed 70% of the votes.

In yesterday’s by-election,  Samsuri received 64,998 votes, defeating Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate General Brigadier (rtd) Raja Mohamed Affandi Raja Mohamed Noor, who obtained 27,778 votes.

Takiyuddin said support for BN in Kemaman had dropped 11%, compared to the 41% of the votes its candidate received in 2022.

“We (PAS) remain committed to mature, dignified and democratic politics not only in our role as an opposition bloc in Parliament, but as the government of the states we govern in the belief that it is for the interests of the country and the people,” said Takiyuddin.

“We are ready to take on greater responsibilities on the national front when the situation requires, following the failure of Putrajaya to ensure that the people and the country are protected from the negative actions of the government.” – December 3, 2023.
