ONLY an additional 6.2% in Malay support is required for Pakatan Harapan (PH) to win 100 parliamentary seats in peninsular Malaysia, said civil rights lawyer Syahredzan Johan.
Syahredzan, who is assisting the PH campaign in Selangor, also urged opposition supporters to come out in high numbers on May 9 and to persuade their friends to do the same.
“We are 6.2% from 100 seats in peninsular Malaysia. It’s so close, we can almost see the change,” he told over a thousand supporters at Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Petaling Jaya, tonight.
“We need to speak to the fence-sitters. We must tell our friends and colleagues at the water-coolers to bring about this change.
“We need only 6.2% more. That is the difference between the new government and the same old contractors,” he said.
Syahredzan, who trains polling and counting agents (Paca), spoke of his experience as a passive opposition supporter in the 2008 election, and said he decided to be more actively involved this election.
“This time I am trying my best, as long as I have breath in my lungs and as long as Allah allows it, to give my all to help the candidates. They need help from Paca agents and other (legal) assistance.
“Why did Maria Chin, Mazlee Malik, and Wan Saiful Wan Jan come out and join (PH)? Why did Rafidah Aziz come back from retirement? Because Malaysia needs urgent help. Because we need to change the management.
“We need to rebuild this country. I am afraid that if we don’t do anything, the damage done by those in power cannot be repaired. We vote on May 9 not just for ourselves, but for our children, families, and future,” he said.
Syahredzan also condemned those who criticised PH Segambut candidate Hannah Yeoh for her evangelical Christian background.
“I was angry when I heard people saying that Hannah Yeoh had a Christian agenda. What right do you have to judge her faith? As long as she has good intentions and is a moral person, that is all that matters. What business is it to anyone what her faith is?” he asked.
At the same event, Wanita DAP international secretary and Selangor Wanita DAP deputy chairperson Sangeet Kaur Deo attacked caretaker prime minister Najib Razak’s wife, Rosmah Mansor, for her luxurious life.
“We have people who do not have roofs over their heads. They don’t have running water in Sabah and Sarawak. Children cannot go to school, but you have Rosmah carrying handbags. How much is her Birkin handbag? RM500,000 for one.
“There are young people today who will not own a house and she has a RM500,000 handbag,” she said.
Sangeet also attacked the promise of three million jobs by the ruling government.
“High skilled jobs only make up 37% of jobs, according to a Bank Negara report. In 2015 and 2016, more than 50% of the jobs given went to foreigners.
“(Caretaker minister) Khairy Jamaluddin said there would be three million jobs. But 50% will go to foreigners.
“For the first time in history, there are more Bangladeshis than Indians. How did that happen? According to some statistics, even the Chinese will be outnumbered.” – May 5, 2018.
