THE grandson of one of Malaysia’s most respected leaders, Dr Ismail Abdul Rahman, tonight urged Malays not be fooled by Umno’s talk that the community will be sidelined if the opposition captured Putrajaya.
Tariq Ismail said Malays will neither lose any rights nor will the Malay rulers be harmed.
“The royalty will not be harmed and we will not be sidelined. It is only Umno deceiving the community to hold on to powers,” he said at a ceramah in the TTDI community hall in support of Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) Segambut candidate Hannah Yeoh.
The Bersatu supreme council member said it was hard for him to speak at the ceramah against Umno, which was his grandfather’s party.
“This area is named after my grandfather. He was in Umno and I also was in Umno but I rejected that.
“The prime minister is also my relative but on principles alone I have rejected him and gone against him,” he said to the cheers from the crowd.
Among the speakers tonight include former industry and trade minister Rafidah Aziz, prominent lawyer Ambiga Sreenevasan, Yeoh and the late Karpal Singh’s daughter, Sangeet Kaur Deo. – May 5, 2018.
