VOTERS will tomorrow determine if PAS continues to hang on to the Kemaman parliamentary seat, or if Barisan Nasional (BN) can spring an upset.

After a two-week long campaign, voters will head to 49 polling stations to mark their choice of candidate – either former chief of Defence Force Gen (Rtd) Raja Mohamed Affandi Raja Mohamed Noor of BN or Terengganu Menteri Besar Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar of PAS.

A total of 244 polling streams will be opened from 8am to 6pm and the tallying of votes would be conducted at the Dewan Berlian Utama, Kemaman Municipal Council.

Election Commission chairman Abdul Ghani Salleh expects about 70% of the 141,043 eligible voters to cast their ballots in the by-election tomorrow, but this is still subject to weather conditions because rain has been forecast throughout the day.

A total of 387 policemen and six military servicemen eligible for early voting had cast their votes by post to ensure focus on rescue works during flood season.

On November 28, early voting was carried out at the Kijal police station, involving only three voters who were spouses of military personnel.

Terengganu police chief Mazli Mazlan said seven reports were lodged during campaigning and a thorough investigation will be carried out.

The by-election was called following a September 26 decision by the Terengganu Elections Court to nullify PAS candidate, Che Alias Hamid’s victory in the 15th general election. – Bernama, December 1, 2023.
