No such thing as 'phantom voters', says EC chairman

The Malaysian Insight

THERE is no such thing as “phantom voters”, a term used merely as propoganda to cast the Election Commission in a bad light, said chairman Mohd Hashim Abdullah.

Bernama reported him as saying such voters are actually those who no longer live in the constituencies where they are registered, as well as those who have changed their address, but return to vote.

“There are voters who return to the constituencies (where they are registered) only once every four or five years.

“Perhaps, the locals no longer recognise them, and assume that they are ‘phantom voters’.”

He said the EC sends teams to police stations nationwide to obtain copies of permits for burial to confirm deaths, as well as issues requests to families of the deceased for copies of death certificates.

He said in Sarawak, the EC sends teams to longhouses to confirm the deaths of residents, as there are deaths that are not reported to the National Registration Department. – May 4, 2018.
