PAS is contesting non-Malay-majority seats with the aim of splitting votes in Barisan Nasional’s favour, said PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
Bernama reported her as citing the Chinese-majority Teluk Intan parliamentary seat as an example.
The constituency has 66,487 voters, of which 42% are Chinese, Malays (38%) and Indians (19%).
“PAS is also contesting Sungai Siput, even though Malays make up only 33% of the seat’s 55,002 voters. The Chinese make up 39% and Indians, 21%,” she told a press conference at Felda Lasah in Sungai Siput yesterday.
Teluk Intan will see a three-cornered fight between Gerakan president Mah Siew Keong, who is defending his seat, DAP’s Nga Kor Ming and PAS’ Ahmad Ramadzan Ahmad Daud.
The Sungai Siput federal seat will see a four-cornered fight involving PKR’s S. Kesavan, PAS’ Ishak Ibrahim, MIC’s S.K. Devamany and incumbent Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj of Parti Sosialis Malaysia, who contested on a PKR ticket in the 2013 general election. – May 4, 2018.
