MARINA Mahathir has slammed Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for being indifferent to whether Malaysians working in Singapore return to vote in the 14th general election.
She said companies in Singapore, like IKEA, are more concerned about voter rights than the caretaker deputy prime minister.
“Singaporean companies said they will let (Malaysian) voters take leave to go home and vote. IKEA in Singapore is more considerate than Zahid,” she said at a Pakatan Harapan ceramah in SS3, Petaling Jaya, tonight.
Zahid was reported as saying last month that “the government neither encourages nor discourages (returning to vote), as that is an individual’s right”.
“But if the employer from the said country (Singapore) does not permit (Malaysian workers to take leave), I think the best thing to do is to not come back to vote.”
Marina said the Barisan Nasional deputy chairman’s apathy is one of the reasons the people must come out and vote in large numbers, so that they can change the government for the better.
“Look at all the stories, about what they (BN) might do, postal votes and all that… they can only be beaten if we come out in large numbers.
“If we come out (in small numbers), we cannot win the elections. In GE13, a lot of opposition seats were lost because people did not come out to vote.”
The daughter of PH chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad said “the other side” wants to utilise Selangor’s RM4 billion reserve should it take over the PKR-led state.
“They, on the other side, that is what they want… buy a new yacht, new plane, new condo, buy a new ring. You want them to take this money?
“We look forward to all of you (voting in GE14). We will make a better Malaysia.”
Some 1,000 people turned up at the PH ceramah, which, apart from Marina, also featured speakers like the pact’s Petaling Jaya candidate, Maria Chin Abdullah, and Centre to Combat Corruption and Cronyism director Cynthia Gabriel. – May 3, 2018.
