NIK Omar Nik Abdul Aziz today said he carries on the legacy of his father, the late PAS spiritual leader Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, in joining Pakatan Harapan, as the pact’s struggles are the same as the former Kelantan menteri besar’s.
He said PH’s goals are similar to what Nik Aziz had fought for, for 20 years, and the same could not be said for the Islamist party now.
“I know that the immediate family were pressured… and were told that they had left the religion and betrayed Tok Guru’s fight. But I’m the one who is carrying on his legacy,” he said at an election campaign programme in Shah Alam, Selangor.
“So now, I pick PH because I am confident that PH’s approach is the same as my late father’s,” he said, calling on voters outside Kelantan to return home and vote for the main opposition bloc on May 9.
Nik Omar is PH’s candidate for the Chempaka state seat in Kelantan, which was contested by his father when he was menteri besar until his death in 2015.
Nik Omar’s brother, Pasir Mas incumbent Nik Mohamad Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz, is PAS’ candidate for the Bachok parliamentary seat.
PAS has ruled Kelantan since 1995. GE14 will be the first general election without Nik Aziz.
Nik Omar said the people have the right to pick which “team” they believe is the best to govern the country.
“We were told that if we walked out of PAS, we would be changing our religion and ‘leaving’ Prophet Muhammad.
“We are choosing (voting) not because of religion. We want to pick the (candidates) we are confident in.” – May 3, 2018.
