PUTRAJAYA’S poor implementation of the goods and services tax (GST) has burdened the people, Daim Zainuddin said today.
The former finance minister said the consumption was punishing the people instead of serving as the beneficial taxation system it was meant to be.
“There is GST throughout the world but people don’t complain. Why (do people complain) here? It was poorly implemented. It burdens the people
“It is an important tax but do not punish the people .They were not ready for it. When you don’t have enough money, do not penalise the people,” Daim told Malaysia Decides in Pekan, Pahang.
The former Umno treasurer blamed caretaker prime minister Najib Razak for the tax which he said was introduced to pay off debts.
“Any policy that takes the people’s money, it must be given back. Make good use of the money, not use it to pay back debts,” he said.
Daim said if Pakatan Harapan were to come into power, it would abolish the GST to bring down the price of goods.
“If we abolish GST, things will be cheaper. We are not lying. This will happen. It is true.”
The former banker also said it was PH’s duty as the new government to downsize the cabinet ministers and weed out corruption to increase the nation’s revenue.
Daim has openly endorsed PH candidates such as caretaker Selangor menteri besar Azmin Ali, Fahmi Fadzil in Lembah Pantai, Wan Saiful Wan Jan in Pendang, and now, Zahid Mat Arip in Pekan.
Daim also intends to campaign for the PH prime minster candidate Dr Mahathir Mohamad in Langkawi. – May 3, 2018.
