Bring it on, I'm not bothered, says Dr Mahathir of fake news probe

The Malaysian Insight

DR Mahathir Mohamad has brushed off the latest police investigation into him, this time under the Anti-Fake News Act 2018, over his claims that his aircraft had been sabotaged.

When asked about the probe, the Pakatan Harapan chairman said he is not bothered, adding that he had been investigated many times over the past few years.

“They can use whatever (act to investigate me). I am not afraid of any investigation. I have been investigated a number of times,” he told reporters after attending the Jelajah Pakatan Harapan ceramah in Kuantan, Pahang, last night.

The 93-year-old is being investigated over his statements alleging that his aircraft had been sabotaged just as he was about to leave for Langkawi on the eve of nomination day last week.

The former prime minister said the sabotage was to prevent him from filing his nomination papers the following day.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia, which investigated Dr Mahathir’s claims, found no sign that the plane had been tampered with.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Mazlan Lazim earlier said a report has been lodged against Dr Mahathir, but he refused to name the complainant.

Former finance minister Daim Zainuddin described as “silly” the investigation into Dr Mahathir.

Speaking at a ceramah at a low-cost flat in Kerinchi, Kuala Lumpur, last night, he questioned how a complaint on a faulty aircraft tyre could be considered fake news.

Earlier this week, a Danish national became the first to be punished under the newly enacted Anti-Fake News Act, over a YouTube video he had posted regarding the shooting of a suspected Hamas member in Kuala Lumpur.

Salah Salem Saleh Sulaiman, 46, pleaded guilty to maliciously publishing fake news in the form of a YouTube video, in which he claimed that he was with the Palestinian victim during the shooting and had made countless calls to police, who arrived at the scene 50 minutes later, while an ambulance came an hour later.

Salah Salem was sentenced to a week’s jail and fined RM10,000. – May 3, 2018.
