PAKATAN Harapan believes that it has struck gold, with the eldest son of the late PAS leader Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat joining its ranks.
The pact will not confine Nik Omar Nik Abdul Aziz to Kelantan. Instead, he will be rolled out as one of PH’s big-ticket campaigners. His first speaking engagement will be in Putrajaya.
Kelantan Amanah chairman Wan Abdul Rahim Abdullah said Nik Omar will share the stage with PH chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Putrajaya candidate Dr Samsu Adabi Mamat, and pitch the pact’s case to voters in the administrative capital tonight.
“We created a wave here in Kelantan when we announced him as our candidate. Now, we believe his campaigning will influence voters outside Kelantan.”
He said Amanah wants to develop Nik Omar into one of its national leaders.
Besides urging Putrajaya residents to vote for PH, Nik Omar is also expected to call on Kelantan voters living in the Klang Valley to return home to cast their votes on May 9.
Wan Rahim said Nik Omar’s decision to stand on an Amanah ticket has created anxiety among the PAS leadership, and has resulted in uncalled-for comments from the Islamist party’s leaders.
“Even the PAS president has made unnecessary and rude comments, that even his deputy, Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, had to advise him.”
PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang had hit out at the “children of PAS leaders” who left the party to join the PH opposition pact.
In an open letter published by the party’s mouthpiece, Harakah, Hadi said these “sons and daughters” should not have abandoned their fathers’ struggles to join a coalition led by Dr Mahathir.
Apart from Nik Omar, Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa (the son of former PAS leader Yusof Rawa) and Mohd Faiz Fadzil (the son of former PAS president Fadzil Noor) are also with PAS splinter Amanah.
Nik Omar was sacked from the Islamist party after he was announced as the PH candidate for the Chempaka state seat in Kelantan – the seat once held by his esteemed father.
Nik Mohamad Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz, another son of the famous Tok Guru, is contesting the Bachok parliamentary seat under the PAS banner. – May 3, 2018.
