Why is EC leaving polls materials featuring Xi, Najib untouched, asks Wan Azizah

PAKATAN Harapan tonight questioned why Election Commission personnel have not removed election materials featuring images of caretaker prime minister Najib Razak and Chinese President Xi Jinping, in accordance with its new rules.

PH deputy prime minister designate Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said no action has been taken against such Barisan Nasional billboards in Johor, whereas EC officials have cut out the face of Dr Mahathir Mohamad from a PH billboard.

“Why are pictures of the Chinese president and Najib still there? They are afraid of Dr Mahathir. That’s why they removed (images of) him,” she told a crowd of 8,000 at a PH ceramah in Kuantan, Pahang.

The EC recently imposed new rules that candidates are only allowed to use, apart from their own photos, images of their party presidents and deputy presidents.

Meanwhile, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu said PH will not allow prime minister designate Dr Mahathir to take over the finance minister’s portfolio should the opposition pact take over Putrajaya in the 14th general election.

He said this is to prevent a recurrence of the issues plaguing the administration of caretaker prime minister Najib Razak, who also held the post of finance minister.

“We will not let Dr Mahathir become finance minister. Even if he asks, we will not give it to him. If he becomes another Najib, it would be disastrous.”

Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin said Najib will go all out to “play dirty” during the campaign period.

“This is what Najib will do in the next seven days. There will be obstacles and a lot of problems. Be careful. He will play dirty.”

The former deputy prime minister told Malays not to be fooled by talk that their special rights will be removed and a non-Malay will become prime minister should PH win GE14.

“If PH wins, they say, the country will be ruled by the Chinese, and Malays’ special rights will be removed.

“This is a lie. Do not believe what they say.” – May 2, 2018.
