RAFIZI Ramli is ready to face Khairy Jamaluddin in court over comments he made on social media regarding PKR candidate Dr S. Streram being barred from filing his nomination papers.
The Pandan incumbent said the Umno Youth chief’s lawyers sent him a letter of demand today.
“I am ready to face Khairy in court, as I have done with other Umno leaders before. However, it is Khairy’s moral responsibility to clarify matters that have angered the public, on the involvement of individuals from Rembau Umno Youth, who prevented the Pakatan Harapan candidate (from contesting),” he said in a statement.
Rafizi said social media users have shown evidence, in the form of videos and pictures from Facebook, confirming that the Election Commission officer in charge, Hafidzan Idris, who is a former Rembau Umno Youth information chief, had prevented Dr Streram from filing his nomination for the Rantau seat.
It was reported that Rafizi had allegedly raised racial sentiments among Indians in Rembau by saying a candidate from the minority community had been prevented from running in the May 9 polls, and so, they should vote against Barisan Nasional in revenge.
Rafizi said Khairy has a duty to Rantau and Rembau voters, to clarify whether he personally knows Hafidzan.
“By suing me, it shows that Khairy himself is concerned about angry voters (especially Indians)... which could undermine his chances in Rembau.”
On Saturday, Umno Youth lodged a police report against Rafizi over his allegedly defamatory remarks made on social media regarding the victory of caretaker Negri Sembilan menteri besar Mohamad Hasan in Rantau.
Mohamad won the state seat unopposed after Dr Streram was barred from entering the nomination centre to file his papers, as he did not have his candidate’s pass as required by the EC. – May 2, 2018.
