SULTAN of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar was elected the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong by his fellow Malay rulers today.
He will be the new king for five years effective January 31.
The decision was made at a special meeting of the Conference of Rulers today.
Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah’s reign as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong will come to an end on January 30.
At the same meeting, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah of Perak was elected deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong for the same period.
The Terengganu sultan chaired the meeting attended by seven Malay rulers, Keeper of the Royal Seal Syed Danial Syed Ahmad said in a statement.
The Perlis and Kelantan rulers were the two absentees.
Syed Danial said the decision of the Malay rulers has been conveyed to both Houses of parliament as well as the prime minister.
Al-Sultan Abdullah ascended the federal throne on January 31, 2019.
The king is elected on a rotation basis. – October 27, 2023.
