THE Election Commission should cut out the face of caretaker Federal Territories minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor from Barisan Nasional campaign billboards in Kuala Lumpur like what it did to an opposition billboard in Johor bearing Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s image, said Hannah Yeoh.
“The image of Tengku Adnan continues to be featured heavily on billboards, despite the fact that he is neither president nor deputy president of Umno,” said Pakatan Harapan’s Segambut candidate in a statement today.
“This is clearly a case of double standards by the EC in enforcing its new guidelines.”
EC officers today cut out PH chairman Dr Mahathir’s face from a billboard in Ayer Hitam, following the commission’s new rules that allow images of only the candidate, and his or her party’s president and deputy president to appear on campaign materials.
“This unfair ban on images of party leaders, other than the president and deputy president of a candidate’s party, has been applied selectively to PH,” said Yeoh, who is incumbent Subang Jaya assemblyman and former Selangor legislative assembly speaker.
The new rules on campaign materials are seen by critics as an attempt to limit the influence of Dr Mahathir in the 14th general election.
“If Tengku Adnan is allowed to be the face of BN all over Kuala Lumpur, then surely, Dr Mahathir has every right to be the face of PH,” said Yeoh.
“I urge the EC to display the same zealousness by cutting out Tengku Adnan’s photo from billboards all over Kuala Lumpur today.” – April 30, 2018.
