INDIA yesterday approved the export of 170,000 tonnes of non-Basmati white rice to Malaysia.

“The decision by the government of India is reflective of the close ties between India and Malaysia and in line with India’s continued policy of supporting efforts of governments in friendly countries towards safeguarding domestic food security,” the Indian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur said.

The news was conveyed by Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to Malaysian Foreign Minister Zambry Abdul Kadir over a telephone call on the same day, it said.

Zambry expressed his appreciation to New Delhi for supporting Malaysia amid the rice shortage.

The necessary notification for the export of the special quota of non-Basmati white rice for Malaysia was issued by the Indian Foreign Trade Directorate-General yesterday, the Indian High Commission said.

Since September, the price of imported white rice in Malaysia has soared due to the global rice supply shortage caused by climate change and restrictions by major rice-exporting countries, including India.

Putrajaya has made moves to ensure the affordability and sufficient supply of rice.

Agriculture and Food Security Minister Mohamad Sabu reportedly said in late September that discussions were held with representatives of India Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the country’s white rice export restrictions. – Bernama, October 19, 2023.
