HARTAL Doktor Kontrak (HDK) praised the allocations for healthcare in Budget 2024 but was disappointed there was nothing on the welfare of contract doctors.
HDK said that while the national budget carried many positive aspects, the absence of a comprehensive plan to address the concerns of contract doctors was not included.
“The lack of a concrete strategy in the budget may exacerbate the issue of brain drain and strain the healthcare workforce further, especially with the impending construction of additional hospitals and facilities.
“We hope the government remains open to adjustments in the budget, particularly with regard to human resources, as this is fundamental to the effectiveness of the healthcare system,” the group said in a statement.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced an increase in the health budget allocation from RM36.3 billion to RM 41.2 billion ringgit, representing a 15% rise.
HDK hopes lawmakers will raise and deliberate on these crucial issues during the budget debate sessions.
“This budget represents progress, but it is imperative that it continues to evolve to meet the evolving needs of Malaysia’s healthcare landscape.
“We look forward to further dialogue and cooperative efforts to fortify our healthcare system, ensuring its robustness, accessibility, and sustainability for all Malaysians.”
HDK also said the funding boost in the budget is pivotal in ensuring the delivery of high-quality healthcare services to Malaysians across the nation.
“The decision to raise the sugar tax is another commendable step towards mitigating non-communicable diseases, predominantly linked to excessive consumption of sugary foods.
“More so, channelling the tax proceeds towards the treatment of diabetic patients and support for dialysis centres demonstrates fiscal prudence and a commitment to addressing critical health issues.”
HDK said it awaits further explanation from the Health Ministry regarding the tax on chewing tobacco to gain a comprehensive understanding of its implications and potential benefits. – October 14, 2023.
