PKR vice-president Chua Tian Chang has lodged a police report against the Election Commission (EC) over the rejection of his nomination papers today.
Popularly known as Tian Chua, the would-be Batu candidate said the rejection was in violation of the court’s decision and electoral rules.
He said the electoral process should be fair and transparent.
Returning Officer Anwar Mohd Zain disqualified Tian Chua based on Article 48 of the federal constitution, which stated that an MP is disqualified if convicted of an offence for which he is sentenced to not less than a year in jail or fined not less than RM2,000, unless he has received a pardon.
The PKR man, who would be defending his seat for the second time, was found guilty of using foul language to outrage the modesty of a police officer and was fined RM3,000 by the Petaling Jaya Sessions Court in March 2017.
However, the Shah Alam High Court allowed an appeal filed by Tian Chua and reduced the fined to RM2,000 shortly after.
EC chairman Mohd Hashim Abdullah had today said Tian Chua could file a petition in court against the body’s decision to disqualify him. – April 28, 2018.
