IN his first campaign after he was confirmed as the Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate for the Langkawi parliamentary seat, Dr Mahathir Mohamad promised to solve the problems of the Indian community.

In a dialogue with about 200 representatives of the community today, the PH chairman promised to ensure Indians in Malaysia were not marginalised.

“I was told yesterday that many older adults (in the Indian community) hold ICs that are not blue but red. We will try to get them a blue IC as citizens.

“We promise, if PH is established as the government, to make many changes and to pay particular attention to Indians who are poor,” he said in his speech at the event organised by Hindraf.

The former prime minister said there were many problem besetting the Indian community but they would be solved if PH was the government.

“I will have a meeting with the Indians as with the Malays and Chinese to hear their problems and find solutions. Provide job opportunities.

“There are no Indians in LADA (Langkawi Development Authority). I think many young Indians can be trained to work in the luxury hotels in Langkawi.

“In short, we are looking for employment for Indian youth just like for the Malay and Chinese youth. This is a promise that we can make,” he said, to shouts of “Hidup Tun”. – April 28, 2018.
