Take matter to court, EC chief tells disqualified candidates

TIAN Chua and others unhappy with decisions made during today’s nomination process can take their case to court, said the Election Commission chief.

Mohd Hashim Abdullah said the decision to bar the PKR vice-president from contesting in Batu was made by the constituency’s returning officer.

“Let the matter be brought to court, and let (the court) decide. We will abide by the court’s ruling,” Hashim said at the close of nomination.

He said it is wrong to assume that Tian Chua has been “completely disqualified” from running in the 14th general election.

“We don’t know the court’s decision yet. It depends on what the court decides, when the hearing can be held, and the court’s verdict. We will just abide by it.”

Returning officer Anwar Mohd Zain made the decision to disqualify the two-term Batu MP because of a RM2,000 fine imposed by the Shah Alam High Court.

Hashim said Pakatan Harapan’s candidate for the Rantau state seat, Dr Streram Sinnasamy, who was denied entry to the nomination centre to submit his nomination papers in time, can do the same.

“If they are unhappy, they can also submit a petition.”

The decision to deny entry to Dr Streram resulted in caretaker Negri Sembilan menteri besar Mohamad Hasan winning the seat unopposed. – April 28, 2018.
