GE14 will see several prominent MPs, some of them big names in their parties and on the political scene, dropped from contesting in the election for various reasons.
Some are making way for younger blood. One is MCA veteran and cabinet minister, party secretary-general Ong Ka Chuan, who has stepped down from his Tanjung Malim seat. Another is United Sabah People’s Party (PBRS) president Joseph Kurup, the Pensiangan MP and caretaker minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, who is giving way to his son, Arthur Joseph Kurup.
DAP’s eight-term Kepong MP Tan Seng Giaw, 75, was earlier adamant about defending his seat, but later accepted the party’s decision to drop him. The opposition stronghold will be contested by the Segambut incumbent, Lim Lip Eng.
Another notable name that will be missing from Parliament is whistleblower Rafizi Ramli, the Pandan MP known for exposés on the National Feedlot Corporation (NFC).
Convicted of breaching the Banking and Financial Institutions Act and sentenced to 30 months in jail for leaking confidential bank details about NFC, Rafizi has a stay of execution pending appeal, but the PKR vice-president has decided that his conviction puts his candidacy at risk.
In Barisan Nasional, the decision not to field MyPPP president M. Kayveas in Cameron Highlands and Umno senior man Puad Zakarshi in Batu Pahat saw their dramatic resignations.
Kayveas quit all party posts, including as president, while Puad, who was previously Batu Pahat MP but lost the seat in 2013, quit as Putrajaya’s Special Affairs Department (Jasa) chief.
Another controversial BN figure dropped is Sepanggar incumbent, Jumat Idris, who is serving a suspension by Umno for criticising Sabah Chief Minister Musa Aman. The seat will be contested by caretaker Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Abdul Rahman Dahlan.
PKR, however, had the most turmoil over candidate selection amid factionalism and intense lobbying. A draft list was leaked out, going viral on WhatsApp, forcing a denial by the party.
